Did you know that the distances between the starting points
of the veins in a lilac leaf are grouped in the same mathematical harmonic order as the pipes of an organ? Or that the
spiral in a sea shell flows out from its center according to that very same mathematical ratio?
In fact, we witness this "Golden Ratio" everywhere. It's evident in such things as the positioning of the seeds
in a pine cone, the shape of the pods in a sunflower, and in Art that pleases the eye of the beholder.
So it shouldn’t surprise you to find out
that a piece of Art that doesn’t address the Golden Ratio can leave you feeling unsettled without knowing why. It is the actual foundation of the harmony between all things. The untrained eye can sense when it is missing and we feel uncomfortable.
A light hearted
approach and a contemplative eye towards natural harmonies are the most important rules in my studio. A piece is not finished until it “feels” good to the eye.
While it’s my place to understand how and why these harmonies work, the viewer need only feel comfortable “within”
the piece, so they might afford themselves the time to explore its subtleties and make it their own.
